What is Christmas in July?

You may have heard of Christmas in July, a celebration that originated in the southern hemisphere where July is a winter month. It is meant for people to congregate and rejoice in the festive spirit even far outside the typical Christmas season.

In the British Virgin Islands, Christmas in July is a special holiday with a unique background and meaning, particularly uniting the Caribbean locals of the BVI and Puerto Rico.

After Hurricane Irma in 2017, which caused devastating damage to the British Virgin Islands, the people from Puerto Rico filled their boats with supplies and sailed over to lend a helping hand to the people in the BVI. In other words, the people of Puerto Rico played a crucial role in the rescue and reconstruction efforts in the BVI in the aftermath of the hurricane.

While the Christmas in July event existed before the 2017 Hurricane, it was made bigger and more special after the natural disaster that caused major destruction all over the BVI. As a token of appreciation to the Puerto Ricans and in honor of unity, a celebratory tradition was formed in the BVI that built on the already-existing Christmas in July party. A week-long event now takes place every year around July 25, during which hundreds of boats and people from Puerto Rico, informally known as the “Puerto Rico Navy”, as well as tourists and locals, arrive to join in on the fun.
