Packing Tips for a Sailing Vacation

/ Published in Sailing Tips

So, you've finally decided where you will be sailing. Now another big dilemma surfaces: what should you pack for your sailing trip. What if you'll be visiting fancy restaurants, taking long walks on the beach, or in the worst-case scenario, what if the weather will be very bad and cold? You may think that there are many things to think about when you're packing bags, but it is pretty easy.

Keep in mind that storage space on a sailboat can be really limited. Depending on a chartered boat and the number of guests, it can get crowded, and the last thing you want is tripping over a bunch of travel bags. The best choice of a travel bag is a duffel bag. By the way, the first thing you should pack is travel documents.

Let's start packing

Put together everything you think you'll need for a sailing vacation. A good idea is to make a copy of your documents and keep them separated from the original ones, just in case you lose something. Once you book with Navigare Yachting, you will have your sales manager answer any questions you have regarding your booking.

The next thing to remember is you really won't be needing too many clothes for the vacation. Most of your time you'll be spending on a boat, chilling with friends and/or family and swimming, so it's the most important thing is to have spare swimsuits and something to cover up, like a beach towel.

Of course, bear in mind that you'll probably be taking long walks in beautiful locations and visiting some of the best restaurants our skippers can recommend.

What to take with you

For a one-week sailing vacation, we recommend that you bring at least:

  • 3 swimsuits
  • 3 pairs of shorts
  • 7 t-shirts (plus whatever you buy along the way)
  • sandals and walking shoes (either tennis shoes or boat shoes) which can get wet
  • swimsuit cover-up
  • enough underwear for the week
  • sleepwear if people other than your spouse or partner are on the cruise
  • a light windbreaker for quick downpours
  • a beach towel
  • and your toiletries

It is also a good idea to have some kind of day pack or fanny pack that lets you carry money, sunglasses, passport, guide books, a water bottle, sunscreen, or anything else you might need ashore. We advise you to bring a small flashlight with you, as it can come in handy.

Also, you must remember to bring your sun protection. Constant wind on a boat keeps you cool, but that's the easiest way to get sunburns without noticing before it's too late.

As in any other situation, accidents can happen, so make sure you bring an emergency kit. Any medicine that you bring with you keeps in its original packaging to avoid any problems with the Customs. And always bring some extra, as you never know how long will the vacation last.

Our last tip would be to bring a lot of gadgets that will help you to capture every moment of your vacation.
Sailing is something that you will remember forever, especially if it's your first time.
