Enjoy an exotic destination on your own terms, try charter sailing with Navigare Yachting!
A sailing charter is the practice of renting a yacht, such as a monohull or a catamaran, and traveling to various coastal or island destinations. While predominantly a vacation activity, a sailing charter can also be a corporate event.
There are two main kinds of charter: bareboat and skippered.
In a bareboat charter, one rents a boat they skipper themselves. This is particularly enjoyable and cost-effective when gathering a group of family or friends. Navigare Yachting also offers courses to teach basic seamanship and prepare our guests for bareboat chartering. If you prefer a hands-off holiday or don’t feel comfortable sailing along, you may hire a skipper through Navigare.
A skippered charter means the yacht comes with a full crew, usually a tandem of skipper and hostess/private chef.
Chartering a yacht is one of the greatest vacation options in the world! You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy your downtime in an idyllic setting that offers relaxation, freedom, exhilaration and plenty of fun, all in one experience at your own pace.
Spending a week or two to sail in an exotic location with family and friends offers a break and bonding experience unlike any resort, cruise or tour could ever begin to offer.
There are so many wonderful places to sail, the choice is yours. At Navigare Yachting, we offer destinations in 9 countries in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean as well as Thailand, New England and Sweden. The most popular charter destinations with the largest fleets of boats are usually located in tropical destinations where the sailing grounds are remarkable, and where the sailing season is the longest.
The British Virgin Islands is probably the most popular sailing destination, although there are incredible coastlines to explore in the Mediterranean particularly in Croatia and Greece. If you want to set sail for the adventure of a lifetime, you should consider exploring less known – but equally attractive – locations like Sweden, Turkey or Thailand!
The cost of a sailing charter depends on the number of guests aboard (usually determined by the number of cabins/berths), the size of the yacht and the season, but rates are pretty comparable to ski and golf vacation.
A sailboat will run between $200 and $700 a day, depending upon the season and the size of the yacht. On a big catamaran in the Caribbean (where the costs can be split among several couples), the costs will usually range between $600 to $1,200 per day.
Contact your Navigare booking agent to learn more about the low/high season dates and rates for the destinations we offer.
When planning your charter holiday, be sure to factor in the cost of the transportation to the destination including airfare and transfers to the base (planning flights early will significantly lower the airfare cost), provisioning (food and beverages) and insurance (also called damage waiver).
Many charter companies withhold large sums on a credit card to cover for potential damage to the boat. However, when you book with Navigare, the majority of our destinations does not require any deposit, deductible or damage waiver. The cost of the insurance coverage is included in the mandatory All-Inclusive Pack.
As described earlier, when you book a yacht with crew, you book your charter with a captain and a mate/chef who are responsible for sailing the boat and the preparation of your meals. In the scenario of a bareboat charter, you take full responsibility of the sailing yacht and all aspects of your journey. Either option offers distinct advantages based on your sailing experience and what you want out of your vacation.
If you are a sailor with cruising experience, the bareboat option may be ideal for you. It gives you and your guests the most freedom. Fancy being alone with family and friends on your own boat and going wherever you want to go when you want to?
That being said, a fully crewed charter adds an extra level of luxury for an enjoyable, carefree experience. And for those looking to sharpen their sailing skills, having a captain aboard is a great opportunity to learn and help you gain confidence for going bareboat the next time around!
Before you embark on a bareboat charter, you must be completely comfortable sailing a boat of similar size in similar sailing conditions. Upon booking with Navigare, you will be asked to submit a sailing resume to indicate your experience level on boats like the one you plan to charter.
Please note that ASA is recognized and accepted throughout Europe. To charter a boat up to 30 tons, you need to have a Bareboat Chartering level (ASA 104). Above 30 tons (i.e. Lagoon 450 and larger) Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106) is required. As well in most Mediterranean destinations, ICC (International Certificate of Competence) and IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) licenses are accepted. In Croatia, you can skipper a yacht if you have a RYA Day Skipper Course license. In general, we will accept other national qualification/certificate of sailing ability from any recognized sailing association.
In some destinations like in Europe, the skipper must possess a valid sailing license for the size and tonnage of the boat you intend to charter, in compliance with the country’s law. The co-skipper must sign a formal Navigare statement attesting of his or her sailing experience. A VHF license may be recommended or mandatory. To learn more about sailing credentials, please visit our FAQ page.
Should you want to verify the eligibility of your sailing credentials and license, please feel free to contact us. We can also assist you with obtaining the necessary credentials.
Once your resume is in order, rest assured you will be well-prepared! In addition to the video check-in accessible ahead of your arrival, our staff provides a boat briefing to ensure you are familiar with the boat and its systems and a chart briefing to introduce you to the waters, cruising areas and how to get up-to-date weather info.
Safety always comes first! Should your sailing ability not satisfy our requirements, we reserve the right to assign a skipper at your cost to help you get familiar with the boat and/or the sailing grounds.
Beside sailing, you and your guest will enjoy snorkeling, swimming, exploring islands and sightseeing, plus simply kicking back and relaxing! However, if you want a little more action, we offer equipment rental and packs for the most adventurous experience – kayaks, diving, fishing equipment along with many other destination-specific activities.
Every yacht comes ready with a tender (or “dinghy”) so you can easily travel to shore when your boat is moored by the coast. You’ll be able to enjoy more diving options, along with water skiing, etc. That’s one of the major benefits of a charter vacation … you can set the pace and do exactly what you want to do!
Wake up at your own pace, have breakfast onboard, perhaps a refreshing morning swim… Then you decide on the next destination which might include a lunch stop or heading toward your next night’s location. Sometimes, you may decide to simply stay put and go nowhere!
Once you have chosen a new destination, you’ll sail for a few hours, stop for lunch, swim, snorkel, etc. Then it’s sailing for a few more hours to that evening’s anchorage. Arrive and set for the night. Then it’s more swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, sunbathing with a great book, etc. At sunset, maybe it’s cocktails on deck with some music. Perhaps you’ll have dinner on board in the cockpit, or you’ll wander up to a beachfront restaurant.
When you’re back to the boat, you can lounge beneath a canopy of stars, read, chat, play games … whatever floats your boat!
